MEMORIES OF JEREZ CHRISTMAS
“I do not fear the punishment
and in the middle of the Nueva St.
I stop and talk to you.”
…my Aunty Antonia, drew water from the well, while the pot was cooking, which tasted like glory..
Christmas, above all, were the moments that I remember, where a magic difficult to describe was born … the “zambombas” in the courtyard, on the street, the open houses … there were no doors …
Christmas carols, Bulerias, ..and more after the night some seguirilla, hummed by a gypsy, on the way to his “owl”, entering through that window, while the light from the streetlamp shone until dawn..
Recuerdos, y vivencias.., de mi gente, …gentes sencillas, cante y baile, risas, quejíos..y, el cafelito de la tarde.
And, at what moment?
When! .. at what time did “the man in the suit” come to expropriate our roots? Our songs, our dances, to “market” with them?
And, from that very moment, a cold omen was born … to “stop being.”
